ELD Coordinator’s Training

This PDE-developed interactive self-paced tutorial provides an overview of all responsibilities associated with the role of District/School EL Coordinator. It provides participants with a self-assessment and plan template in each area to help fulfill these responsibilities. It also supplies links to associated guidance documents, systems needed to perform necessary tasks, and personnel who provide can support and assistance. It is intended for educators who are new to the position, but it can also serve as a refresher for those who have held the position for some time.

Act 48 credit available. A certificate will be awarded upon completion.

Estimated time to complete is 2 hours.

The EL Screening, Identification, and Placement Process

This PDE-developed interactive self-paced online tutorial covers the screening, identification, and placement of ELs. It walks through the procedure in detail for both pre-K and K-12 outlined in the guidance documents. It is designed for all personnel who are involved in the enrollment process for ELs and any other educators or administrators who wish to learn more about the process.

Act 48 credit available. A certificate will be awarded upon completion.

Calculating Individual English Learner Student Targets and Analyzing Student Growth

This tutorial provides an overview of the rationale for the state EL accountability calculation method, how to calculate individual EL growth/attainment targets, how to set school and district targets, how to determine individual student versus program needs, general considerations for EL data analysis, and understanding the growth to target reports.

EL Accountability and the Future Ready PA Index

The English Language Proficiency Indicator is one of two on-track measures, along with Chronic Absenteeism (reported as Regular Attendance), that also serves as federal accountability indicators. This indicator provides a view of English learner growth toward, and on-time attainment of, English language proficiency as measured by the ACCESS for ELLs. English learners are expected to attain proficiency in English within a six-year span; however, this timeline can be less depending on initial proficiency level. Performance on this indicator will be calculated and depicted for all schools that meet the minimum student group size of 20 eligible English learners.

Reclassification, Monitoring and Re-Designation of ELs

This online asynchronous training is meant to support districts in making EL reclassification decisions. The EL Reclassification Tutorial will overview the reclassification policies and the completion of reclassification rubrics and cover sheets. Participants will also walk through an example of calculating student scores using the language use inventories rubrics, utilize the online reclassification tool for completing rubrics and generating data files, and uploading the master data file to generate individual student cover sheets. Educators who complete this course may receive Act 48 credit for doing so. A certificate will be awarded upon completion.

English Learner Reclassification Training Module

The English Learner (EL) Reclassification Training Module assists educators in completing Rubric 1 of the Language Use Inventories during the EL reclassification assessment process. This module provides video examples of EL students using language at various grades and proficiency levels, as well as additional criteria and supportive resources that can be used with Rubric 1 to help guide reclassification decision-making.

WIDA’s 2022-2023 Pre-K Asynchronous Online Courses

Pennsylvania educators have access to four free online courses offered by WIDA Early Years through July 11, 2023, on the Pennsylvania PD Registry website.

Illustrated through a classroom vignette, this module explores how EEC educators scaffold children’s language learning within the environment, routines, and activities.

WIDA – Promising Practices for Dual Language Learners

This module illustrates how EEC staff members may utilize the WIDA Promising Practices guide to begin implementing the Essential Actions.

WIDA: Preparing to Administer Alternate ACCESS for ELLs

WIDA provides training resources to help educators prepare for and administer Alternate ACCESS for ELLs.

WIDA’s 2022-2023 Asynchronous Online Courses

Pennsylvania educators will have access to the following eight asynchronous online courses offered by WIDA from September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2023.

All eWorkshops are approved for Act 48 credits.

Educators are required to submit a certificate of completion with their 2022-2023 WIDA Act 48 Request Form.

Course 1: Classroom Teachers: Engaging Multilingual Newcomers

Explore community building and instructional strategies for teachers of multilingual learners who have recently arrived in the U.S. or who are new to the U.S. schools.
Target Audience: K-12 classroom teachers

Course 2: Social Studies: Engaging Multilingual Learners through Inquiry

Focuses on the use of student and class asserts to plan inquiry-based instruction, and explores how to consider the content and language needs of multilingual learners in social studies.

Course 3: Engaging Multilingual Learners in Science: Making Sense of Phenomena

Provides multiple strategies for engaging multilingual students in the central work of sensemaking in science.

Course 4: Home Languages in the Classroom

Focuses on the essential question: How can I set up routines and learning activities that promote the use of home languages in my classroom? Offered in partnership with the Interconnected Coalitions for Multilingual Education and Equity (ICMEE) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL)

Course 5: Making Language Visible: Exploring the Key Language Uses

Highlights the Big Idea of a Functional Approach to Language Development. Focuses on intentional language instruction in the classroom using the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, 2020 Edition.

Course 6: Reframing Education for Long-term English Learners

Gives educators an opportunity to reframe the education of multilingual learners classified as Long-term English Learners (LTELs).

Illustrates the benefits of designing mathematics instruction to provide multilingual students opportunities to use language to express their ideas and co-construct ideas with others.
